Franck Perret: Head of the class
For the first time ever in equestrian history, the FEI Reining rankings are led by a Frenchman! Franck Perret’s excitement is palpable.
How does a Frenchman become world number one in an essentially American discipline?
You get to world number one through hard work, focus, time, good horses (which are talented and obedient), and a good relationship between the rider and horse that leads to top classifications. That’s how you climb your way up the rankings. Obviously, the event quality matters, but it’s really about the classification number. Recently, every time I’ve taken part in a CRI 3* competition, I’ve finished in the top three.
Which nation usually takes home the world title?
Riders have been German, Belgian, Italian... A lot of European riders, actually. But this is the first time there’s been a French rider at the top! In the NRHA* ranking, the Europeans have been doing well for a few years now.
What are your first impressions of the Caen Exhibition Centre?
We got here this morning. Right now, my first impressions of the arena are really good. The horses have good traction in the circles and they’re doing well in the sliding stops, sliding without having to force it. The foundations seem really stable.
What are France’s chances for these Games?
France is doing really well. Lately, nearly all of the pairs selected have placed well abroad or have even won. The selector was really lucky because he has top quality riders this year. He started with twelve riders and kept six. The team still hasn’t been announced yet, he’s waiting for the visit on Sunday morning. Regardless of his decision – whether I’ll be part of the team or compete individually – I’m thrilled to be here. And I think there will be some great surprises by the French.
In terms of visibility for the discipline, this kind of event is really huge…
It’s enormous, because riders from around the world have come here to France. The Reining event sold out in under a day! That shows how excited people are about the discipline. Plus, having all the best riders in the world from all the disciplines at a single event is very special – that doesn’t happen every day.
*In addition to the FEI circuit, the National Reining Horse Association (NHRA) also has its own circuit. This influential American association has its own rankings and hosts an annual world championship.
