Big crowds in 1st week
After the first week of competition, attendance across the different venues in Normandy has been in line with estimates and points to a strong second week that will feature Jumping, Vaulting, Driving and, as a demonstration sport, Polo.
The numbers speak for themselves:
- There was not one seat to be had at D’Ornano Stadium for the Opening Ceremony (20,000 seats),
- 83,000 spectators across the 4-day Dressage competition, a record in the history of the World Equestrian Games
- A raucous crowd at the Reining events (14,000 spectators),
- Gradually increasing crowds at the Para-Dressage after a rainy start and a real effort to draw attention to the sport (daily tickets made available at box office)
- Undeniable success of Horseball, a demonstration sport, with 8,600 spectators. Popularity of the event confirming that Saint-Lô (department of La Manche) is the Horseball capital of France.
- Sell-out for Eventing (22,600 for dressage, 50,000 at the cross-country and 20,000 in jumping),
- Large crowds at sites open to the public (coast and race course in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel) during the Endurance competition, adding to the 5,500 spectators at the vet gate in Sartilly
- More than 100,000 visitors in the Games’ Village in Caen
All told, some 246,700 spectators have experienced the Games in the first week (not including the Village).
At mid-week, the 540,000 ticket mark had been surpassed in terms of tickets sold for the entire fortnight…and it’s not over!
Tickets in the following events are still available:
- The Driving marathon
- Jumping competitions (except the 3rd round of individual qualifying on 6 September)
- All Vaulting events (except the team final on Friday 5 September)
- The Village in Caen (every day)
